The Gift You Possess to Change the World
“Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren’t any need for you in all your uniqueness to be on this earth, you wouldn’t be here in the first place. Never forget, no matter how overwhelming life’s challenges and problems seem to be that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all changes that matter in the world come about. So, be that one person.” -Buckminister Fuller
Who are we? What is our purpose? Where do we find ourselves when we feel so small in such a big world? Do we merely just exist to just be an added part to this universe? Do we make a difference to anyone else? What would we be remembered for if we were to suddenly be gone? It’s simple, yet the details are weaved deeply within this intricate aspect we call life. There has to be something more to this life than what we are seeing, but what is it? Where is it? What would bring me closer to this discovery? Is what I am looking for unable to be seen by the human eye?
The next question in my “Empowering Questions” deck asks a very simple, yet depth-defining question: Who Am I?
You might be wondering about all of the questions at the beginning, they will all tie in together with this question, I promise. So, to the question: Who Am I? It might seem like such an easy questions to answer, I mean, I am just a girl, born and raised in a small town. I am a girl who had dreams bigger than herself and did not chase them. I am a girl who grew up to be a strong, independent, woman that wants to be a role model for younger girls in the upcoming generation that it is possible to make a life for yourself, by yourself. I am a girl who does not want to dwell on her past mistakes, but wants to embrace future opportunities. I’m a girl who spends most of her time alone, rushing through thoughts that fill my head from morning to night. I am a girl who struggles with giving and accepting love to others. I’m a girl who loves deep life quotes, and might get too invested in The Bachelor on Monday nights. I am just a girl who feels so deeply for the best and even the worst of people, can see past all of someone’s flaws and faults to find the pain they have buried deep within their hearts. I am that girl who wants to leave behind a legacy, one that really shows that all you need to do to make a difference is something so simple, which is to be kind to others and to remember, we cannot judge someone else’s path without walking in it for ourselves.
I know who I am, I have pieces of me to work on but for the most part, I am me and I like who I am. I want to be more than just a description, I want to be someone with a purpose. I truly believe that one day, our purpose for our life will just come to us, like a sudden hit on the head when you stand up too fast and there is a shelf hanging just a little too low. We are such a small piece in the ratio, in comparison to this big world that we live in. There is this whole world out there I just want to explore. I want to see the waters of the pacific, the ice of Antarctica, the deserts of Africa, the crystal blue waters of the Maldives, the mountains of Europe, the jungles of South America, maybe even take another route, just to see the Great Wall of China. I want to meet people of all different ethnicities, I want to get to know them, their struggles, their stories, their happy memories, and all of the in between. There is just so much more than this small town here in Indiana. I just want and need more. I want to accomplish more than what I have, and I want to be remembered at the end of my life as someone who spent her life doing more for others rather than just living selfishly for me.
Do we exist just to merely be another warm body to fill this planet? Are we nothing more than just a bunch of humans, competing in this race, trying to make it to the top, only to discover that there was never a reward for the competition to begin with? Would it make you happy to be at the top, only to see someone struggling at the bottom? Maybe, so many people exist solely because there will be people who are more and/or less successful than others. There will be people with more money than others. There will be people with more pain than others. Maybe, just maybe, we are made not to coexist silently with the people around us, but to share the experience and riches of life with those who are less fortunate. This does not only have to be money, to give to others can include gestures, words of encouragement, a helping hand to someone in need, or maybe just a simple compliment to someone on a random Tuesday. I want to challenge you to give just one compliment, or give words of encouragement to one person every day. Give even to those who are not always the most kind to others, as they might be the ones who may need your gift the most.
You might not be able to see the impact you make on the world from your own human eye. One person could pay it forward to someone else, who could pay it forward further, which starts this domino effect that you might not ever get to physically visualize. In the end, you want to be someone who made an impact, whether that be 1 person, or 1 million people. If you want to change the world, you must start by changing yourself and perspective. We might be average people, living in average, boring towns, working our average, boring jobs, just wandering aimlessly through our average, boring lives. Just because we are average does not mean we cannot reach others on a large platform. We might not get recognized by an award, we might not have fame, heck, some people might not even remember your name, but there will be at least one person who will hopefully feel a little bit more confident, a little bit less insecure, a little happier even if it is for a second, which is so much better than any reward.
Create yourself into someone who wants to do more for others than for yourself. You want to live a life you can look back on and be proud of. You would want to be remembered for the pieces of yourself that you left with others. Maybe your gift of encouragement really pushed someone to go after that job they might not have had the confidence to go after. Maybe your gift of a compliment made someone’s day a little brighter that they paid it forward, and gave a compliment to someone else, which made their day brighter too. Start your own revolution! Even a small step in the right direction is progress.
Maybe, the gift we possess to change the world is right inside of us, and we looked right past what was here all along. So, when you are asked the question: Who Am I in the future, you can say I am a person who is here, a person ready to share my gift with others, a person ready to change the world, one person at a time. You are more than just a description, you are more than a hobby, you are more than just a job. Use your gift of just simply being you, and the purpose of your life might come to you. Maybe we might not ever know our purpose of life until our journey is completely over, and we get to see the large scale impact we never thought we made. Thank you for reading, and I hope you have a great week.
